Here’s a decision-making strategy someone shared with me recently…
Get a 3×5 index card. On one side, write YES in big letters. Underneath, list all the things that you want more of in your work and life right now. On the other side, write NO in big letters and list all the things that you want less of in your work and life right now.
Place the card by your phone or computer where it’s in plain sight and readily accessible.
Next time someone calls and asks, “Would you like to…? Could you…?” say, “One moment – I’ll check.” They may think you are checking your calendar, but you are really looking at your handy-dandy index card to remind yourself of what is important, of your standards and boundaries, of your aims. If it’s on the NO side, say, “No, thank you.” If it’s on the YES side, go ahead and check your calendar and say, “Yes, how about the 18th?”
So simple it’s freakin’ brilliant, isn’t it?
